Together VJ Competition

Boston's best visualists go head-to-head

In 2016, the art of the VJ is rising like never before.

Over the years, live visual performance has evolved from a fascinating hobby, to an indispensable part of groundbreaking events around the world.

From bedsheets and projectors hanging in dirty basements, to LED walls on arena stages, VJs can be found practicing their craft, creating immersive sensory experiences for hungry crowds. The barrier to entry has never been lower, and the ceiling of possibility keeps rising.

In this environment, the Together VJ Competition returns in 2016 for a fourth year of fast-paced visual stimulation. This unique event brings VJs together for one night to show their skills, head-to-head, in a compressed format that showcases their talent.

If you're looking to put your pixels out in the world and get noticed - or looking to connect with the people who do - this event is for you!

If you're fascinated by the sweet spot where art and technology meet, this is a chance to see digital creators bringing their best.

Or, if you're just looking for an extra-sensory dance party, you can soak in the visuals, and get down to the sounds of our expert DJ team.

This is a competition, complete with judges and prizes - but it is also a community, a chance to get together and celebrate this growing art form.

Victoria Shen is a Somerville-based multimedia artist and musician whose visual work is positioned at the intersection of art history, pop culture, and identity politics. She constructs interactive video/sound installations which layer and saturate appropriated media to produce new critical readings. Through a process of visual exaggeration and effacement, her video work holds up a mirror to the absurd side of images we consume.

I started in college making shitty films (literally splicing and cutting film) until i met my friend who took one of my experimental videos and remixed it almost instantly with a program called CoGe. I was like Whaaaaaa!!? Then he invited me to his yearly house party and we did viz on a 40in Samsung for 8hrs, taking turns as the djs changed. After that it was on, learning content creation through after effects, mandelbulb 3d, and spilling money into midi controllers, new programs, actually buying CoGe instead of 3 years of setting up a new comp everytime, resolume, particle illusion, osculator, datamoshing, a black magic capture card, a go pro for live feeds, and finally a space helmet! I'm now using my film editing and shooting experience to transport people through wormholes, and into whatever frequencies that are out there tickling our eyeholes.

It all began with cracking open 8 and 16-bit video game cartridges and short-circuiting them on-beat with whatever bass-oriented electronic music I had playing in the background. This lead to getting my hands on a copy of ArkaosVJ and recording everything I was circuit-bending to use as VJ content. Later mixing action-y video clips from obscure horror/sci-fi/and cartoons, and creating animated logos and glitchy graphics and looping/layering them together for VJing for live music in NYC, PDX, and Boston. Since 2005 I have had the pleasure of VJing my content for artists such as: Doormouse, Otto Von Schirach, Venetian Snares, Bit Shifter, NullSleep, Drop the Lime, Machine Drum, Yahct, Mathhead, Dev/Null, and many more.

Hey my name is Joe and I'm a south shore native currently residing in Dorchester. I come from a musical background and I try to make VJing as hands-on and improvised as possible. I love A/V hardware and experimenting with different combinations of gear and subjects. Video synths, VHS, and video feedback are a few of my favorite things. I'm looking forward to meeting some local artists and seeing what Boston VJs have to offer!

Obsessed with music videos since a young age, the concept of VJing came naturally to me after a few years of splashing colored oil around on an old overhead projector in time with the music at Electric Tuesdays in Worcester, MA. More recently, projection mapping and the development of procedural & generative visuals stand out as particular fascinations constantly driving me to learn and experiment, combined with cutting edge advances in motion graphics software rendering and the modularity that comes with piling layers upon layers of effects to convert simple video into so much more. Recent notable performances include G Jones & Space Jesus @ Middle East Boston, Magic Hat's Electric Peel release party in NYC and the Living Dream Art Gallery in Norwich, CT. Expect the unexpected.

mc escherr
who is mc escherr? is he the former all-star competitive fps player from a top 5 north american team / college radio dj / kid who got banned from his school's dorms for hacking after he graduated? yes, and now he occasionally streams sped-up anime clips synced to doujinshi music while pressing buttons and twirling knobs on his midi controllers. inspired by club-mogra, yohji yamamoto, and hideaki anno, mc escherr creates his own style of vjing that skirts on the edge of fair-use as he attempts to reverse-engineer animation effects because in the end he just really likes math.
